Housing & Meals
Housing
Students are housed in double rooms at the Stanford House, a collection of older buildings with rooms and facilities connected by more than fifty staircases. The centre accommodates 45 students, two junior deans, and our Faculty in Residence, and includes a seminar room, a library, a lounge, a music room, six kitchenettes, and the staff offices. We do everything that we can to maintain our beautiful historic buildings to a high standard, and all Stanford House students are expected to help maintain the cleanliness and order of the common areas of the house, and to take their turns on the cleaning rota.
As a result of the unusual character and location of our historic buildings, we observe quiet hours after 10pm, and we have a strict prohibition on alcohol in the common areas of the house. We support our students' organising social gatherings, however, and these would contravene house policy, we will generally help them to organise social events off-site.
Dining
In Oxford, Stanford students are affiliated with one of three colleges of the university, thus creating the opportunity to take lunches, snacks, and dinners alongside Oxford students. Our students often report that their experiences of formal dining in their colleges are among their most memorable non-academic experiences on the programme.
You will be able to take around seven meals per week in your associated college during the eight weeks of the Oxford term.
In addition to the college dining arrangements, students receive a meal allowance as part of their stipend, to cover the purchase of groceries to cook for themselves at the centre, or to buy meals in local pubs or restaurants. We will offer advice and guidance on saving money so that the sipend will stretch over the eleven week programme.
