Shreya Komar (she/her/hers) - Stanford in Oxford

Major: Design

College year while abroad: Spring 2025

About the photo: This is me enjoying my first afternoon cream tea at The Rose, a cozy café near Stanford House. I became so obsessed with tea during my time at Oxford that I ended up throwing a tea party for the entire cohort later on!

Why did you choose to study in Oxford?

As a premed student, I wanted to immerse myself in a humanities-focused environment. Oxford’s rich academic history, beautiful campus, tutorial system, and literary legacy offered the perfect contrast. I’ve always been captivated by the dark academia aesthetic and Harry Potter so Oxford felt magical in every way.

How did studying away support your academic growth?

Oxford’s emphasis on studying one subject in depth rather than juggling multiple classes helped me realize the power of focused learning. I was able to engage more deeply with material, think critically, and move beyond surface-level understanding. It reshaped how I approach learning, even in my science courses.

What did you learn about yourself during your study away experience, especially through any challenges or major cultural adjustments?

I learned how to truly take care of myself, from cooking my own meals to managing my time and staying organized. Oxford’s tutorial system also taught me the value of self-driven learning; with just me and the tutor, there was no hiding behind busywork. I discovered that I’m more independent, capable, and resourceful than I realized.

Briefly describe a typical day and your favorite part of daily life in your program location.

A typical day started with readings in the Stanford House library and a quick breakfast before heading to a café or library for more tutorial prep. I'd grab lunch with friends at my college (Brasenose!). I'd try to get some fun activity in during the afternoon, weather it was punting, picnicking in Christ Church Meadows, hitting the gym or joining a quidditch session. Evenings often meant trying dinner at a friend’s college, followed by game nights, exploring new pubs, or co-working hangouts.

If applicable, how did participating in an internship, volunteership or experiential-based project help you grow professionally? What specific skills did you gain?

I focused entirely on academic coursework during my time at Oxford, which allowed me to fully engage with the tutorial system and maximize personal growth.

What was the most essential item you took with you on the program?

My journal. I’m so grateful I documented my everyday experiences and thought processes while living in a new country. It helped me stay grounded and reflect meaningfully. Whether it’s a journal, scrapbook, or digicam, I highly recommend documenting the journey. It makes the experience even more memorable and personal.

What advice would you give students who are considering studying away?

Research your program thoroughly to make sure it’s a good fit and consider the season you’ll be there. Going in the spring made a huge difference in the experiences I was able to have. Talk to advisors and past students!
